on Productivity and Rest

There's a great post from over at T4G.

At one point the conversation turned to our busy schedules. One person exhorted another about the importance of rest. It was then that John Piper quietly commented "I find productivity restful for my soul."
It's so [retro] to find that attitude.

A previous generations of evangelicalism had a much higher respect and view of work. They often quoted this scripture: (John 9:4) "I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work." They sang hymns along the same lines and would often say things like:
"Only one life, will soon be past,
only what's done for Christ will last."
Homework: look at the NT use of the word Labor and Work to describe the life to which God calls his followers.

That's [retro] evangelical.

Piper's words ring true. How often have Christians given up the labor of the gospel for the "relaxation" of the television. As Jesus said: "Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” (John 6:27). Great thought Matt!
