The Heritage of Fearing God's Name: Meditations from Psalm 61

Psalm 61:5 tells us that "you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name."

What does it mean to fear the name of the Lord? And what sort of birthright or inheritance does the Lord provide those who fear his name?

Deuteronomy 28:58
If you are not careful to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and awesome name, the Lord your God,

Psalm 86:11
Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; unite my heart to fear your name.

Isaiah 59:19
So they shall fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun; for he will come like a rushing stream, which the wind of the Lord drives.

Micah 6:9
The voice of the Lord cries to the city— and it is sound wisdom to fear your name: “Hear of the rod and of him who appointed it!

Malachi 1:14
Cursed be the cheat who has a male in his flock, and vows it, and yet sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished. For I am a great King, says the Lord of hosts, and my name will be feared among the nations.

Malachi 4:2
But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.

Revelation 11:18
The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged, and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.”

CONCLUSION

To Fear the name of the Lord is called "sound wisdom." (Micah 6:9)

Fearing the name of the Lord involves
1) Fulfilling vows. (Malachi 1:14)
2) Walking in God's truth (Psalm 86:11)by doing the words of the law (Deuteronomy 28:58)
3) Being aware that my actions have consequences, and poor actions will result in judgement (Isaiah 59:19)

The Reward for Fearing the Lord's Name
1) Healing and joy (Malachi 4:2)
2) Heavenly rewards (Revelation 11:18), specifically in this passage, the opening of God's temple in heaven and the revelation of the ark of the covenant.
