Pride leads to judgement; meditations from Ezekiel 27
Today, I'm looking at Ezekiel 27.
The first half (vs. 1-25) talk about the pride of Tyre and the second half (vs. 26-36) are about judgement. These two are linked, as 28:2,6-7 show.
It is beneficial for us to make a list of the things that Tyre was proud of, and then use that list to check our own hearts for pride. Ready?
1) Beauty (vs. 3, 4, 11)
2) Aquaintances (esp. in 10-25)
3) Accomplishments in war (10-11)
4) Accomplishements in commerce (12-24)
5) Self-reliance (implied in the word 'perfect')
6) Abundance (16)
7) Wisdom and Skill (8-9)
8) Wealth (12)
The danger of this is that it leads to inflated thinking of ourselves. In 28:2, the prince of Tyre says "I am a god, I sit in the seat of the gods, in the heart of the seas," but God replies, "yet you are but a man and no god."
God protect us from the thinking that leads us to pride.
